South London has always been a place of creativity, resilience and innovation. The neighbourhoods surrounding East Street Market, from Walworth and Elephant and Castle to Newington Butts, have produced some of Britain’s most remarkable figures. Few names are as instantly recognisable as Charlie Chaplin, the beloved actor, filmmaker, and comedian who brought laughter to millions. Born in Walworth in 1889 and raised in poverty around Kennington and Elephant and Castle, Chaplin’s early life was marked by hardship. The bustling markets and lively streets of South London influenced his understanding of people, their struggles, humour and resilience, which he later transformed into timeless cinema.

Born in Rotherhithe and raised near Elephant and Castle, Michael Caine grew up amid the post-war spirit of South London. As a young boy, he and his family often visited East Street Market, where traders’ voices and the everyday hustle left a lasting impression.  Caine’s journey from local lad to international British icon captures the ambition and authenticity of the people who call Walworth home.

Born in Newington Butts in 1791, Michael Faraday is one of the greatest scientists in history. The son of a blacksmith, he had little formal education but developed a fascination with electricity and magnetism that would change the world. Faraday’s discoveries led to the invention of electric motors, transformers and the foundations of modern technology. Despite his fame, he remained humble. His story reflects the spirit of curiosity and opportunity that still defines the communities around East Street Market today.
